[American Metaverse Association | June 30, 2024]
In June 2024, Professor Fei-Fei Li, a globally renowned leader in artificial intelligence and a professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, officially joined the American Metaverse Association (Meta X) as an expert member of the Committee on AI and Ethical Standards. Her appointment significantly enhances the Association’s expertise in responsible AI governance, public policy design, and global interdisciplinary cooperation within immersive and intelligent virtual environments.

Prof. Li currently serves as the Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). She is widely recognized for her pioneering contributions to computer vision, machine learning, and ethical frameworks for AI. She is the co-creator of the landmark ImageNet project and previously served as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud. Prof. Li is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and an advisor to multiple global institutions including the United Nations and the World Economic Forum.
In recent years, Prof. Li has been an outspoken advocate for embedding fairness, transparency, and human dignity into AI systems, especially as generative AI and large language models become increasingly integrated into virtual environments. She promotes a vision of “technology for humanity,” calling for a transdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and cross-sector approach to global AI governance.
As a member of Meta X, Prof. Li will contribute to the drafting of the upcoming Global Guidelines for Ethical Immersive AI Systems (2025) and the Framework for Joint Governance of General AI in Virtual Spaces. She will also support collaborative initiatives between the Association and international partners such as UNESCO, IEEE Standards Association, and other multilateral organizations, with the goal of advancing ethical, standardized, and interoperable governance of intelligent agents in the metaverse.

The American Metaverse Association (Meta X) was founded in November 2022 and is headquartered in Mountain View, California. It is a global standard-setting and policy coordination platform focused on the responsible development of immersive technologies. With over 300 member institutions across more than 30 countries, the Association plays a leading role in guiding innovation and public value across domains such as digital identity, immersive systems, AI ethics, virtual economies, and digital culture.
Prof. Li’s joining reflects the strong commitment of the global AI research community to shaping a metaverse that is not only technologically advanced, but also ethically grounded and human-centered. Her expertise adds significant momentum to the Association’s mission to integrate science, ethics, and policy into a unified and inclusive digital future.
