In January 2024, Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, officially joined the American Metaverse Association (Meta X) as a Corporate Governing Member. This partnership marks Alibaba Cloud’s active participation in building international standards for metaverse infrastructure, deploying AI in immersive environments, and promoting cross-border cloud collaboration. The company’s inclusion brings critical support to the scalability, openness, and sustainability of next-generation metaverse systems.

Founded in November 2022 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, the American Metaverse Association (Meta X) is one of the world’s most influential international organizations dedicated to the strategic alignment, technical standardization, and multilateral governance of the global metaverse industry. The Association comprises member institutions from over 30 countries and regions, including government bodies, research institutes, technology companies, and multilateral organizations. It plays a key role in shaping the global framework for metaverse policy, innovation, and cross-sector integration.

As the leading cloud service provider in the Asia-Pacific region, Alibaba Cloud offers deep technological expertise in distributed computing, real-time rendering, edge infrastructure, and multilingual large model deployment. Upon joining, Alibaba Cloud confirmed its participation in several core Meta X committees, including the Edge and Distributed Computing Council, the Immersive AI Standards Taskforce, and the Global Interoperability Framework Council. The company will contribute to key international standards such as the Cross-Regional Metaverse Data Protocol (CRMDP) and the Cloud-Native XR Infrastructure Guidelines, supporting their drafting, testing, and implementation.

Alibaba Cloud will also work with fellow members to promote global data compliance, federated AI learning within immersive ecosystems, secure GPU scheduling frameworks, and multilingual avatar communication protocols. The company plans to provide infrastructure solutions for emerging applications such as virtual city operating systems, enterprise-level digital twins, and immersive commerce platforms, enabling industrial, educational, financial, and energy sectors to integrate metaverse technologies at scale.

Alibaba Cloud’s membership expands Meta X’s global collaboration network and strengthens East-West integration in metaverse infrastructure design, cross-border computing orchestration, and platform-level interoperability. With major technology players such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta, NVIDIA, and Unity already participating in the Association’s governance structure, the addition of Alibaba Cloud helps form a globally coordinated, full-chain ecosystem for standards development, joint research, policy alignment, and public trust.
