In November 2023, Google LLC officially joined the U.S. Metaverse Association as a Corporate Governing Member, fully participating in the formulation of core metaverse standards, ethical frameworks, and platform interoperability protocols. This partnership signals the systematic integration of one of the world’s most influential infrastructure providers into global metaverse governance and ecosystem collaboration.

As a global leader in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, spatial search, and immersive content interaction, Google has continuously advanced technologies aligned with the metaverse. Its products and platforms—such as Google Lens, ARCore, YouTube VR, and spatial computing research—have laid a solid foundation for the structural design of virtual environments, immersive visual understanding, and next-generation user experience in hybrid digital spaces.
Since joining the Association, Google has actively participated in key governing bodies including the Technical Standards Committee, the Ethics & Social Impact Taskforce, and the Open XR Infrastructure Forum. The company has contributed to multiple core working drafts such as the Interoperable Identity Framework, the Immersive Search Experience Protocol (ISEP), and the Spatial Knowledge Graph Specification. Google also plans to submit open toolkits and interface specifications to support the development of a safer, more inclusive, and more interoperable immersive technology ecosystem.
In collaboration with other members, Google is advancing research into content discoverability, semantic structuring, and privacy protection in virtual environments. One of its leading initiatives—centered on spatial knowledge graphs—aims to improve information organization and retrieval across metaverse layers, laying the groundwork for next-generation “immersive cognition networks.”

As a Corporate Governing Member, Google holds full rights to propose, vote on, and co-develop policy frameworks, and it is actively engaged in technical coordination, developer infrastructure, and global regulatory discussions. Its platforms are also expected to gradually align with Association-backed cross-platform compatibility standards, improving user accessibility and long-term interoperability.
Google’s membership further reinforces the global momentum of collaborative engagement among leading technology companies in the metaverse domain. As search engines, semantic networks, and AI capabilities converge with spatial computing, a new paradigm of “human-machine-space” co-evolution is emerging. Apple, Microsoft, Meta, NVIDIA, Unity, and other key players have already joined the Association’s governance structure, helping drive the alignment of innovation with public responsibility and shared global values.
Founded in 2015, the U.S. Metaverse Association is a leading international organization dedicated to building global standards, ethical governance, and sustainable development for immersive technologies. With over 300 institutional members across 28 countries, the Association serves as a collaborative hub for standard-setting, multilateral governance, academic partnerships, and public policy development. It plays a central role in coordinating the metaverse’s long-term vision: open, trusted, interconnected, and inclusive.
Google’s formal entry into the Association strengthens this global governance ecosystem and contributes to the co-creation of an immersive digital future rooted in openness, responsibility, and cross-sector collaboration.
